Simone Barnes

MJ, Employment and Labor Law, Tulane Law School Class of 2023

Hello, my name is Simone Barnes and I am an HR professional. I have worked in the HR field
for a number of years, primarily in the Talent Acquisition sector, although I have worked in
nearly all areas of HR at some point in my career.

I decided to enroll in the MJ program because of my interest in Employment Law. My favorite
courses in undergrad and grad were employment law courses. I started my career as a legal
secretary working for a small personal injury law firm and continued to work for law firms for
several years. At one of these law firms, while working as a legal secretary, I was approached
with an opportunity to move into the HR department supporting the Chief HR Officer. During
this time, I was pursuing my dual master’s degree in HR Management and MBA at University of
Maryland University College (now UMGC). This opportunity gave me exposure to numerous
areas of HR including benefits administration, employee recognition, performance management,
compensation, training, and yes, recruiting. I love recruiting but now feel I want to focus on
other areas. I am hoping my MJ-LEL degree will help me launch a new avenue in my career
