During the MJ-LEL program, one of the most interesting things I have learned is the many different gender identity terms that have come about over the years. For example, I have never heard of terms such as: androgyne, bi-gender, demi-gender, gender flux, gender fuck, girl fag, gray gender and guy dyke. It’s going to be interesting to see how companies embrace usage of these terms and recognizing the different identities. This topic has become so politicized that I wonder if companies will be slow to respond for fear of backlash, especially on social media.
For example, a recent article about John’s Hopkins University pulling the definition they used of ‘lesbian’ after they experience uproar over the use of ‘non-men- instead of ‘women’. The university’s online glossary of LGBTQ terms and identities defined the work “lesbian” as a “non-man attracted to non-men” before it was taken down.
It’s going to be interesting to see how gender identification and terminology continues to develop and how employers will adapt.
